Our letter to our family

We sent the following letter out to the family this weekend:

As some of you know, we have been working with the doctors for a while to try start our own family. It turns out that --contrary to popular belief-- it wasn't just that we weren't good at, rather we're just not cut out to have children of our own. After some thought and discussion, we've decided that we want very much to raise a family of our own, so we've decided to pursue adoption. We wanted to tell you first - but we're trying to keep it just "family" for now.

We met this week with the folks from the Gladney Foundation, a group that has placed more than 27,000 children in homes over their 117 year history. After getting the information and talking with some other people who have worked with Gladney, we've decided that we're going to go forward with an international adoption (China) with Gladney.

Why China? As you've probably heard, China has a one child per family rule. The Chinese culture places boys ahead of little girls, so many
baby girls are given up for adoption. Adopting in China gives us the best chance to find a healthy baby girl. And --honestly-- who can resist a face like this.

Now they do say that you have to expect the unexpected - there can always be delays - but we could be getting a picture of our daughter within 10 months or so. A few weeks after seeing her picture, we will be going in China for 10 days to finalize the adoption process and bring her home to Texas. The website has a few more details, if you want the particulars.

So, while there's no real "news" to report, we're both just beaming at the prospect of our own baby girl. As they say...stay tuned. :-)
