It's All Part of the Fun
One of the coolest things about foreign adoption is all the research you get to do into a different culture. I've been lucky enough to travel to a few countries, but I really never thought we'd get all the way to China. Besides, Italy and Mexico are Western, and we're about to be fully immersed in Eastern. One of the things that really fascinates me is the language. We've both always picked up languages fairly quickly, but again, this is a whole new ballpark for us. There is a great overview here. Did you know that there are written characters that contain up to 64 strokes?!?! Can you imagine writing a note? It could take days. We both plan on learning at least enough to get by; you know, "Where's the bathroom?" and such, but even I am intimidated by such a complex language. We think it's important, though, because our little girl will be so confused in the beginning; I think it will be nice to be able to sound at least a little bit like what she's used to.
We have an awful lot to learn, but it's actually really fun. I'm even thinking about adding one authentic (read: not Kung Pao chicken or chicken fried rice) Chinese meal a week to our usual fare.

What a cool experience. You guys are going to be amazing parents.
That'll be cool though, you can have authentic Chinese food. Did you know that the Chinese immigrants have to take classes to make "American Chinese Food?"
But it's so yummy.
Yeah, but Bird's Nest Soup scares me a little. It's made of actual bird's nest held together by bird spit. That really doesn't get my appetite going. I think we're gonna have to start with something a little more tame. But here's the real question (courtesy of Camille): What's he gonna do without his tacos?
Who says the baby can't be exposed to other cultures? You can't deprive a child of tacos!!! :oP
AMEN, SISTER FRIEND. No child of mine is going to be raised in a home void of tacos!!! :-)
Learning the language is exciting. I've found a couple of podcasts that are helping.
How cool will it be to say, "I will be your father and I will love you forever," in Chinese.
